Donkey Derby 27th May 2017

Families waiting for the race Oh dear! Walking to the finish. Nervously waiting to start the race.

Plenty of interest in the wide variety of stalls. Everyone having fun. We would like a rosette each please.

Thanks to all those who came to the Legion field again for this years Donkey Derby. A GREAT BIG thanks to all the sponsors of the races, and also to Tesco who donated a large number of LARGE cookies to the event. Also the Co-op helped with some BBQ stuff. Thanks also to the printers of the program, the van hire people and many others, all up they were helpful.

Donkey Derby 28th May 2016

Lions Donkey Derby it was a great family day out!

We had beautiful weather and a grand turnout. Surely there was something for everyone: a dog show, beer tent, burgers or hot dogs, soft toys, car boot sale, information tents, police cars, ice cream van, a huge bouncy castle, games for the children, several tombola stalls, home- made cakes, ducks to be hooked for prizes, craft items to buy, balloons, face-painting and of course THE DONKEYS!

The donkey races drew the crowds and many lucky investors chose wisely and placed winning bets! There were winners and losers but several of the riders in the races come each year because they enjoy themselves so much.

The serious side to this great afternoon is the raising of money.

Fearless riders, aged 9-12, from local riding stables kindly volunteered to race the donkeys. To add to the excitement they asked for faster livelier donkeys which the  supplier provided, but only for the more experienced riders. The skills of the young jockeys over seven races, all sponsored by local businesses, had lots of thrills and spills providing first class fun and entertainment throughout the  afternoon.

There was the added excitement of being able to bet on the race winner using the Tote betting system and fortunes were won and lost - well at least a pound! The attraction of dog shows are as ever,  very popular. There were sixty five entrants over the eight fun classes.

The burgers and sausages supplied from a local source, and char-grilled by an local team from Hayling, and Langstone were in great  demand throughout the afternoon, as was the Beer Tent next door.

A number of local charities and groups took the offer of a free pitch and set up various games and stalls, including First Responders who provided the all important first aid cover and a tea and cake stall.

We are extremely grateful for the sponsorship given by both local businesses and  individuals, the equipment and facilities loaned, and to the jockeys and our helpers on the day, and to you for coming along to support/

We had a lot of fun on the day and hope that you did too!!
