Lions Donkey Derby was a great family day out!

As Visitors entered the field they were met with the aroma of burgers and hot dogs which they could wash down
with a glass of wine or beer. A little further along came the cake stall and ice cream ready for a balmy afternoon.
The children were able to enjoy donkey rides and try their skill at 'beating the goalie' while their parents attempted
to beat the human fruit machine or try their luck on the High/Low cards. The Car Boot Sale was also well attended
                    and sellers reported good takings.

It has been some long time since so much fun has been enjoyed on Legion field. The donkeys were an attraction
for the youngsters before they started to race but when the first race started chaos reigned. It took all the skills
of our young jockeys to get them all to face the right way and even then some of the animals had a mind of their
own. Well done to all for persevering!

The Tote was well supported and odds were announced just 'before the off'. All seven races were sponsored by
local businesses as were the donkeys in each race and all aptly named. A huge thank you to them for such great
support without which the event would not have been a success.

The First Responders brought their own display along and served hot drinks. At the same time they ensured that
the riders who found the back of a donkey too slippery and the ground too hard were immediately checked for
                    bumps and bruises.

After all the previous good weather it was disappointing that we had to be blessed with a biting cold wind which
was so strong that we had to deflate the Big Slide, it being too dangerous for young children to mount. However
a great day was enjoyed by those that braved the elements.

The Hayling Lions wish to express great thanks for such superb support from all who were there on the day.
