The International Association of Lions Clubs
The Hayling Island Lions Club was formed in 1997. It is a member of the International Association of Lions Clubs which was established in 1917 with headquaters in Illinois USA. Lions Clubs are to be found throughout the free world and are now represented in 185 countries with over 1.4 million men and women. It is by far the largest voluntary community service organisation in the world, each club sharing a common objective to serve our community.
The motto of Lions Clubs everywhere is " We Serve"
The first Lions Club appeared in Europe in 1948 and in the UK in 1950, since when they have developed to over 950 clubs in the United Kingdom with some 20,000 members.
The Lions Club of Hayling has 23 like minded men and women devoted to our objectives.
Every club has its own programme of projects but ever since Hellen Keller spoke at the International Convention in 1925 asking Lions to be "Knights of the Blind", work
on preventable blindness has dominated worldwide. However on a local basis almost all of our efforts are concentrated within the community of Hayling Island.
The Hayling Island Lions Club is a Registered Charitable Trust. All Lions Clubs follow one rule which is that "Every penny we receive for Charity must go to charitable causes"
and not to Lions Club administration. The Club carefully researches every request made for assistance whilst at the same time investigating needs itself. We give to deserving
groups and individuals, predominately within the Hayling Island boundary though we also respond to National and International projects at times.
The Club always welcomes new members by invitation from the Club. You will be asked to attend a number of Business Meetings and Social events before being
invited to join by the Directors of the Club.
Every Club has a similar structure. There are fundamentally four areas of responsibility these being, Club Administration, Welfare projects, Fundraising projects and Social events.
